Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania, Australia. It is located in the north of the state and is situated on the Tamar River. The city has a rich local history, which dates back to the early 1800s.

Early Colonisation

The Launceston region was originally inhabited by the Leenowwenne people, of the Mouheneener language group. European settlement began in 1806 when Lieutenant-Colonel William Paterson established a military outpost in the area. Paterson named the site of the outpost after his home town of Launceston, in Cornwall, England.

Prosperity and Growth

During the 1820s and 1830s, Launceston flourished due to the growth of the wool industry. The city became an important transport hub and the main port for the north of Tasmania. It was also a centre for agriculture and mining. By 1853, Launceston had become a municipality and in 1889 it was declared a city.

Historic Architecture

Many of the buildings in Launceston's central business district date back to the 1800s. Some notable examples include the Launceston Town Hall, which was built in 1887, and the Princess Theatre, which was built in 1911. Other historic buildings in the city include the Old Umbrella Shop, the former Post Office, and the Paterson Barracks.

Culture and Entertainment

Launceston has a vibrant arts scene, with many galleries and theatres in the city. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is the largest regional museum in Australia and has collections covering natural history, decorative arts, and colonial history. The Princess Theatre hosts a range of productions throughout the year, including plays, musicals, and concerts.

Launceston is a popular destination for sports enthusiasts, with a range of facilities catering to various activities. The UTAS Stadium is a multipurpose stadium that hosts Australian rules football, soccer, and cricket.
