Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery

QVMAG brings together visual arts and design, history and natural sciences across two Launceston sites: the Art Gallery at Royal Park and the Museum at Inveresk. Its collection began in 1842. History holdings include personal objects, archaeology and industrial technology, with notable objects such as the Australasian League flag and a 1923 Alfa Romeo. Natural-science collections range across zoology, geology and botany, and Inveresk also houses the Launceston Planetarium and an appointment-only History Centre.

Design Tasmania

Design Tasmania presents changing exhibitions and public programmes centred on art, craft and design. Its evolving Wood Collection, established in 1991, focuses on contemporary Tasmanian wood design and includes furniture, vessels, lighting and other works by Tasmanian designers and makers. The collection offers a close look at how material, function and skilled making meet in objects shaped by Tasmania’s design culture.

Raincoat Contemporary Art Space

Raincoat is a small exhibition venue in Centreway Arcade presenting local fine-art work. Its changing three-week displays give visitors the chance to encounter work by local artists in a restored historic arcade setting, while artists can apply for exhibition opportunities. Works by local artists are available for sale, making the space both a place to view current practice and a point of connection with Launceston’s creative community.

Madeline Gordon Gallery

Madeline Gordon Gallery presents work by established and emerging artists across varied media. Displays and the online stockroom include painting, printmaking, textiles and sculptural fibre work, placing contrasting artistic approaches side by side. The gallery’s programme offers a contemporary perspective on how artists interpret materials, images and ideas, with opportunities to spend time with works that range from intimate paper-based pieces to more tactile textile and sculptural forms.

Launceston Tramway Museum

At Invermay, the Launceston Tramway Museum restores and interprets the city’s former tram system. Visitors can explore displays, see restoration work and experience an authentic ride on tram N 29. The collection’s story is also carried through the people who care for it: volunteers contribute to restoration, guiding, archives and operations. Group tram bookings are available by appointment, adding a more tailored way to explore this part of Launceston’s transport history.

State Library and Archives of Tasmania, Launceston

This Launceston location supports northern Tasmanian local heritage and family-history research through reference material and research help. Tasmania’s heritage collections include government and community records, photographs, maps, plans, newspapers, manuscripts, films, sound recordings and works of art. Reference and archival items can be ordered in advance, and the Launceston Manuscript collection forms part of the organisation’s Community Archives, offering a route into local lives and regional memory.

Woolmers Estate

At Longford, Woolmers Estate interprets the Archer family’s former estate and the convict assignment system through 18 original heritage buildings. The Italianate homestead contains family heirlooms, while the National Rose Garden and digital convict-history exhibition extend the story beyond the house. Further interpretation is available through guided buggy tours; combined admission also covers neighbouring Brickendon Estate and the Convict Farm Walk, connecting domestic, agricultural and convict histories.
